SAFEPOST, ‘Reuse and development of Security Knowledge assets for International Postal supply chains’, is a four year Integration project addressing the FP7-SEC-2011.2.4- 1 International Postal Supply Chains. The project started on the 1st April 2012. The project is mainly on facilitating sustainable development of increasing security of postal activities across Europe. The need for a scalable solution that allows real-time communication between publishers and subscribers of postal security data in SAFEPOST CPSS (common postal security space) platform is facilitated by the AEON cloud platform. The same solution could be used for notifications to the CORE’s ecosystem participants, for example in the case of a new detected supply chain threat. After making an inventory of security gaps starting from the perspective of the partner postal operations, the project will develop generic postal security models which will be integrated into a Postal Security Target Operating Model. This will enable postal operators, customs and other relevant actors to understand how to securely exchange information related not only to security but also to the optimisation of postal flows.

To support the implementation of the Postal Security Target Operating Model, a Postal Security Platform will be developed which will support specifically:

  • Targeting screening and threat handling solutions;
  • Postal operations optimization; and will provide
  • a ‘Common Postal Security Space’ with a view to create in the future a European/World Postal Security standard information sharing system.

Project outcomes relevant for CORE: AEON is a cloud platform for the real-time communication of applications over a channel . It was developed by ATOS Spain (more specifically, the Supply Chain Sector in the Research & Innovation department), using mainly FLOSS (Free/Libre/Open Source Software). AEON offers a cloud-based message queueing framework, allowing the virtual entities of the network to publish to or subscribe to an unlimited number of other entities (see Figure to the right). The functionality of AEON is classified in Resource Management and Publish/Subscribe Mechanisms. In Resource Management, the users register and maintain their virtual resources, such as the entities they manage and the communication channels they use. In Publish/Subscribe Mechanisms the users get or send messages. Each communication channel has a publish and a subscribe URL. To send a message to the subscribers, a user makes a POST over his/her publish URL (which is confidential and known only to the user). On the other hand, the subscribers in the network will use the (publicly known) subscribers’ URL to get the new data that were published.

Benefits of AEON towards CORE Task 8.1:

  • Responsiveness: Allows for real-time communication without restrictions to the number of entities.
  • Scalability: Can scale up to large numbers of messages to an unlimited number of subscribers, without noticeable delay for the end users.
  • Flexibility: Based on the concept of the Internet of things, everything can be represented as an Entity with Communication channels (e.g. the Cargo or the Ship that carries it).
  • Low coupling: The Pub/Sub architecture allows for fully decoupled subscribers and publishers, as they do not to delve into the other side’s technicalities of implementation, in order to communicate a communication channel.
  • Simplicity: an open REST API is provided for managing the platform’s capabilities, lowering the technical barriers for subscribing or publishing over AEON.
